Fair Lawn Community Center (April 6, 2022) – In partnership with the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and Bergen County Veterans, Fair Lawn Veterans Affairs honored 25 veterans at the Fair Lawn Community Center this morning. The veterans were presented with medals, pins and certificates to honor their service in the Korean, Vietnam and WWII wars. Vietnam refuge Thy Cavagnaro was the keynote speaker at the first Veterans Appreciation Ceremony. Thy is the founder of the Thanking Vietnam Veterans of Barnegat organization.
Students from FLHS’s Interact Club, student representatives from the SGA, and students enlisting or attending a military academy post graduation assisted escorting veterans to the stage and handing out certificates.
Fair Lawn was recently approved as a U.S. Vietnam Commemorative Partner, a program designed to assist thanking and honoring Vietnam veterans and their families.
“Taps,” the song of remembrance closed the ceremony.
Thank you veterans for your service.
Thank you to the Interact Club students and co-advisors, SGA students, and students enlisting in a branch of the military or attending a military academy after graduation for volunteering at the ceremony. (List of students below.) Special thank you to Kristin Burke, Teacher of Social Studies and AP Psychology, Co-Advisor of FLHS Interact Club and Co-Chair FLHS Military Tribute Monument Committee and Dena DeSantis, Guidance Counselor, Co-Advisor of FLHS Interact Club and Co-Chair FLHS Military Tribute Monument Committee.
