Graduation Requirements
In order to receive your high school diploma in the state of New Jersey, you must complete a 120 credit program of study that includes mandatory core subjects like English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and World Language. You must also complete three required elective courses. Each Full Year course is worth 5 credits, and each 1-semester course is worth 2.5 credits. The following are the set number of credits per subject area needed to graduate:
Language Arts Literacy (English): 20 credits
Mathematics: 15 credits
Social Studies: 15 credits
5 credits of World History
10 credits of US History
Science: 15 credits (must include Biology)
World Language: 5 credits
Physical Education/Health: 5 credits per year
Personal Financial Literacy: 2.5 credits
Visual & Performing Arts: 5 credits
Career/Technical/Life Skills: 5 credits
In addition to these course requirements, every student must pass a state-approved assessment in Language Arts Literacy and Mathematics before graduation.
What is Dual Credit?
Dual credit programs allow high school students to earn college credit for courses taken while they are in high school. Fair Lawn High School has dual credit partnerships with Bergen Community College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, and Kean University.
Benefits of Dual Credit Courses:
Taking dual credit courses in high school costs less than taking college-level classes while enrolled in a college or postsecondary technical school.
Most dual credit course credits may be transferred to college and universities. To find out if a course counts for a specific college requirement, students are encouraged to directly contact the colleges/universities they are interested in attending.
Students can gain college-level academic experience, making their overall transition to post-secondary education much smoother.
Studies indicate that if students take dual credit courses in high school, they will have a greater chance of succeeding in college and earning their degree.
